The Impact of AI on Law Enforcement – Charlotte Gerritsen
Modern AI techniques are capable of finding patterns in large data sets and make predictions based on this. One of the application domains for which these techniques hold great promise is Law Enforcement. Using AI, some scholars claim that it is now possible to predict – to a certain extent – when crimes will occur, who will commit the crimes, and will be victims (so-called predictive policing). This approach obviously can have benefits, but it also comes with a price, for instance in terms of privacy, bias and discrimination. In this talk, I will explain what predictive policing is, show some applications, and discuss the pros and cons of this approach.
Key Takeaways
- Modern AI techniques can be used to predict criminal activity based on large data sets
- This approach may work well in some situations, but also has serious downsides
